Howard Conklin, Jr. of Warwick, NY, passed away on January 12, 2010 at Elant at Goshen.  He was born on May 5, 1927 in Goshen, NY, the son of the late Howard Conklin, Sr. and the late Anna Burt Wendover Conklin.  Howard was the husband of Elmire Marina Langlois Conklin.

 

Howard graduated high school as valedictorian from Bordentown Military Academy in 1945.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, received radar training and was shipped to Guam where he served until his discharge in 1946.  Howard graduated top of his class with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Michigan State University.  Elmire and Howard met in a forestry class, while at Michigan State, and were married on June 18, 1949.  Following graduation, they moved back to Goshen where Howard entered into the family lumber business.  Several years later, Howard moved to Conklin & Strong, Inc. in Warwick where he became president and his family moved to their current home in Warwick.

 

Howard participated in many community organizations.  He served as president of the Warwick Chamber of Commerce and the Warwick Lions Club.  He served 38 years on the Board of Directors as a director and as chairman of the Warwick Valley Telephone Company.  Howard served in an industry-buying group, Lumbermen’s Merchandising Corporation, where he was active in negotiating with national supply companies.

 

Howard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elmire Marina Langlois Conklin; three sons: Huxley Howard Conklin of Westport, MA, Matthew Sanford Conklin and his wife Claudia Giese of Westminster, VT and Nicholas Langlois Conklin and his wife Sheryl Treible Conklin of Warwick, NY; five grandchildren: James Howard Conklin, Elliott Langlois Conklin, Katherine Anne Conklin, Nicholas Clayton Conklin and Benjamin Howard Conklin.  He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mary Carrington Howard Conklin and his two sisters: Pauline Conklin Devito and Mary Conklin Duncombe and his two brothers: George Rensselaer Conklin and Pierson Sanford Conklin.
