William B. Calvin

William B. Calvin, of Lavalette, NJ, passed away on December 4, 2012 at Park Manor Care
Center, Middletown. He was 85 years old.

Born on January 1, 1927 at home in Dallas, Texas, he was the son of the late Joe Frank Calvin
and Bethany Lou (Connally) Calvin. After graduating High School he worked as a Funeral
Director in order to put himself through College and Graduate School. Bill was a graduate of
Texas Southern Methodist University and also attended the Kellog School of Management of
Northwestern University where he received his Master of Science in Hospital Administration.
Upon graduation Bill was honored to be chosen by the founder of the program, Dr Malcolm T.
MacEachren, to be his protege and accompany him on a six month tour of Austraila where
together they instilled the Masters of Hospital Administration program at the University of
Sydney. Dr MacEachren was widely known as “The father of Modern Hospital Administration.”

In 1955, he married his “Long stemmed Rose,” Phyllis (Matthews) Calvin. He was the Assistant
Hospital Administrator at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, NJ before becoming the President
of Roxborough Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia, PA for 35 years before retiring to his much
loved “shore” home on West Point Island in Lavallette, NJ, where he spent time with his
beloved grandchildren and dogs enjoying the beautiful sunsets on the Barnegat bay.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Lavalette, NJ; his daughter Deirdre Hamling and
son-in- law Thomas Hamling of Warwick, NY; his grandchildren: Brooke, Tucker, William “Chase,” and
Molly Rose, as well as his sister, Labeth Sue Kester in Texas. He is also survived by sister-in-
law Shirley Collins, and several loving nieces and nephews.
