Gustave "Gus" Holmes

90, of Warwick, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side on April 19, 2008.

 

He was born in New York City on July 13, 1917, and lived in Jersey City, Weehawken, Teaneck, and Lodi, NJ until his family settled in Warwick in 1974.  He was married to the late Edythe Holmes, who predeceased him in 1981.  Gus served from 1943-1945 in the Army Air Corp as a Corporal in the 836 Bomb Squad, and was stationed in the States and England during WWII.  He retired as a Lithographer at Goshen Litho in 1989.

 

Gus was an exceptionally talented artist, whose artwork was displayed in military yearbooks of sort and posters of the 487th Bombardment Group.  Gus passed his skills on to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

“We will always remember Grandpa for avidly playing Lotto well into his 90’s, the enjoyment he got from gardening and being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

 

Gus is survived by his daughter, Linda Schiefelbein, at home; his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Mary Holmes, Grosse Pointe, MI; grandchildren:  Kathleen Macagnone and her husband David, Newtown Square, PA, Marianne Petersen and her husband Victor, Warwick, Scott Schiefelbein and his wife Melissa, Warwick, Jennifer Holmes,  Silver Springs, MD, and Caroline Holmes, Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren: Michael, Rachel, Samantha, Thomas and Caitlin.

 

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his mother, Sophie; brothers, George, Carl and Max, and sister, Nettie.

 

Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family.

 

Memorial visitation will be on Thursday, April 24, 2008, from 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick 10990.  A funeral service of remembrance will be held at 8:30pm on Thursday.   A graveside service to inter his cremains will be at 11:00 am on Friday at Orange County Veterans Cemetery, 111 Craigville Rd., Goshen, NY. 

 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the charity of ones choice.
