Orlando Guadalupe

of Warwick, (formerly of Queens), died on January 3, 2006  at Schervier Pavilion.  He was 96 years old.  

 

Born on February 14, 1910 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he was the son of Arnaldo Guadalupe and Lucila Sanchez.

 

He was the husband of Blanca Margarita Guadalupe Villanueva.

 

Mr. Guadalupe was an Army veteran of World War II and was a chauffeur to General Potter stationed at Governor’s Island.  He attended New York University where he earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Art degrees. A member of the United Federation of Teachers in New York City, he taught Art at Benjamin Franklin High School in Manhattan, taught Languages and was Chairman of Foreign Languages Dept. at Junior High School 99 in Manhattan.  He also taught Ceramics with the Children’s Aid Society and taught Spanish to the inmates at Riker’s Island, New York.  He traveled extensively throughout Europe and South America to bring languages alive to his students, always encouraging his students to excel and continue their education.   

 

He is survived by his wife, Blanca Guadalupe of Warwick; a daughter, Margarita Symkla and her husband Vincent of Warwick; three grandchildren:  Margarita Elizabeth Jacobs and her husband Anthony G. of Tennessee, Randolph William Knop of Chicago and Erika Leigh Knop of Warwick; a sister, Emilia Lydia Chaves of New Jersey   Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by two brothers, John Guadalupe and Louis Guadalupe, and a sister, Ada Guzman. 

 

Visitation will be on Sunday, January 7, 2007 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick.  Funeral service will be at 10am on  Monday at Warwick Assembly of God Church, Warwick.  Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Putnam Valley, NY.
