Betty Jane Garrison

of Warwick, died on June 10, 2008 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.  She was 77 years old.

 

Born on October 15, 1930 in East Orange, NJ, she was the daughter of Henry Moorhouse and Viola Heinz Moorhouse.  She resided in Nutley, NJ, summered in Upper Greenwood Lake where she later moved and raised her family.  She moved to Vernon, NJ for several years before joining her family in Warwick.

 

Mrs. Garrison was the retired Co-owner of Bengar Tile Company in Sussex, NJ.  Known as “Apple Betty”, she volunteered with Applefest in Warwick, eventually taking the position of Director of Applefest.  She retired after 20 years of working at The Inkwell, where she was affectionately known as "Mom".  She was a volunteer for the Warwick Marathon, Lions Club 5K’s, and Relay for Life, where she originated the water stations.  She was also a member of the Warwick Valley PTA Craft Event, was a Holly Trail host, was 2007 Queen for a Day, was the recipient of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce “Volunteer of the Year” award, and was the organizer and hostess of Taste of Warwick.   

 

She is survived by her children:  Carol Bartnowski and her husband David of Warwick, Jean Kirstein and her husband David of Roxbury, and Benjamin Garrison and his wife Cathi of CT; a grandchild, Christine Barravacchia and her husband Ed ;  two great-grandchildren: Quinn and Amelia;  a brother, Henry Moorhouse of Hobe Sound, FL;  a sister, Catherine Gerlitz of Tampa, FL.

 

Visitation will be on Friday, June 13th, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick.  Funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Saturday at the funeral home.
