of Highland Mills (formerly Sugar Loaf and Croton-on-Hudson, NY), passed away suddenly on December 5, 2008 at home. She was 74 years old.
Born in Oak Park, IL, she was the only child of the late Jerome and Frances Grenley Heppes.
Joanne graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison, earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Hunter College, and was a lifelong educator. She taught home economics at Ossining, NY High School, nutrition at Orange County BOCES and Cornell Cooperative Extension, craft and sewing classes at her store, Sugar Loaf Rag Dolls, and Sunday School. Joanne was a Girl Scout leader, avid Mets fan, board member of Orange County Safe Homes, a busy community volunteer, and active member and trustee of the Sugar Loaf United Methodist Church.
Family members who cherish their memories of her include: Richard A. Manley, her husband of 51 years; daughters: Linda Carr and husband Austin of Miami, FL, Sharon Vander Clute of Warwick, NY, Laura Aibel and husband Dave of Madison, NJ, Donna Kuhnen and husband Ron of Chippewa Falls, WI; and six grandchildren: Cody Marcus, Hannah, Abby, Amy, Brad and Michelle.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Sugar Loaf United Methodist Church, 1387 King’s Highway, Sugar Loaf, NY 10918 on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 11:00 am, followed by a potluck luncheon. All are welcome. Please wear bright colors.
