
Roger Herbert Metzger of Warwick, New York, passed away on October 7, 2018 at the age of 83.
He was the son of the late Altha and Herbert Metzger of Ramsey, NJ. Roger is survived by his wife Susan; his two sons: William Metzger (Veronica) of Warwick, NY, and Robert Metzger (Jeanette) of Fairport, NY, and his two stepsons: Micah O’Connor (Jennifer) of Warwick, NY, and Jerrod O’Connor (Lara Couturier) of Barrington, RI. He is also survived by his sister, Dian Mac Nichol of Gormania, WV. He was proud of his nine grandchildren: Jonathan (Chelsea), Renee (Joseph Hetzler), Loren, and Bria Metzger; and Aidan, Charlotte, Luke, Jackson, and Rory O’Connor. He took special joy in meeting his great grandson, Caleb Metzger. He was predeceased by his wife, Janet Louise Metzger, his brother William Metzger, and his parents.
Roger worked for Orange and Rockland Utilities for 30 years, retiring as Director of Environmental and Administrative Services. He graduated from the University of Maine School of Forestry and proudly served for the U.S. Forest Service in the Coconino National Forest.
Roger loved his family and his community. He devoted many hours to making Warwick a good place to live. He served as a Boy Scout Leader, as Chair of the Orange County Planning Board, as Chair of the Planning Board for the Village of Warwick, and as Village Trustee. He was the Village of Warwick Shade Tree Commissioner for 43 years and conducted Arbor Day Celebrations for Warwick’s children. He was a member of many organizations. Roger loved to travel and visited every one of the 7 continents and countless countries.
Memorial visitation will be on Wednesday, October 10, from 3-7p.m. with a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY 10990
