of Pine Island entered into eternal rest on June 19, 2010 surrounded with love and prayers. She was 96 years old.
Born on February 8, 1914 in Pine Island, she was the daughter of the late Bartholomew and Antoinette Mazur Jarosz. She was the wife of the late Joseph Purta (1967).
Sophie was a retired onion and vegetable farmer, caterer, and bar owner. She loved to travel, play cards with friends, and making kielbasa along with her famous horseradish. She was a member of St. Stanislaus R.C. Church, Pine Island, where she was a member of the Living Rosary Society.
A family statement reads: She possessed great wit and a wonderful sense of humor. A devoted mother and friend to many, especially those who needed help, she will be deeply missed and fondly remembered always by all who knew her. May she rest in peace.”
She is survived by her children: Adele Purta Miller, Joseph Purta and his wife Karen; her grandchildren: Laura Miller Poelmann and husband Lance, Joan Miller Cherry and husband Bill, Joseph Purta and wife Noreen, Susie Purta Iazzetti and husband Ben, Todd Purta and wife Carolyn, Timothy Purta and wife Beth, Tommie Martini and wife Sandi; eleven great-grandchildren: Mariah Miller Halstead, Cassandra Miller, Justin Miller, Billy Cherry, Hans and Vaughnn Poelmann, Joan and Rebecca Iazzetti, Tyler Purta, Holly and Leigha Purta; her loving nephew, Frank Jarosz, whom she raised; a sister, Nettie Jarosz Stankiewicz; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, John, and son, Theodore Purta, son-in-law, Eugene Miller, and grandson, Gene Miller; her brothers, Adam, Frank and John Jarosz.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 22nd, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 23rd, at St. Stanislaus RC Church, Pine Island, followed by interment in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
