Born on January 5, 1936 in Mumbai, India, he was the son of Abdul Majid Momin and Razia Momin.
He married Monique Souvignet on October 16, 1971 in Manhattan, NY.
He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degrees at the University of Bombay. He completed his residency in General Surgery and subsequently served a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
After his training, Dr. Momin joined the International Rescue Committee and served as a volunteer surgeon in Vietnam with them for two years (1969-71). He was also Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Hue. He moved to Warwick in 1977, where he joined the staff of St. Anthony’s Community Hospital, eventually becoming Chairman of the Department of Surgery which he remained until his death.
In 1979 he joined the American College of Surgeons (ACS), admission of which is one of the highest honors a surgeon can receive in the United States. He was also a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons.
A family statement reads: “Niaz A. Momin devoted his life tirelessly to his family and his patients. He helped countless people and saved countless lives – his unfailing generosity and commitment was an inspiration for all of us. His irreplaceable presence will be sorely missed, doubtless as much by the community at large as by his family.”
He is survived by his wife, Monique Momin; a daughter, Shamim Momin; a son, Karim Momin; a sister, Shamima Momin and her husband Haroon Momin and their children, Adnan and Shahan.
A memorial gathering will be held at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick on Thursday, May 22, from 5-7 pm. (845-986-4331)
