
John P. Leahey, of Warwick (formerly of Woodside, Queens) passed away suddenly on November 12, 2013 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 80 years old.
Born on December 31, 1932 in New York, NY, he was the son of the late John Leahey and Margaret McLaughlin (Mc Guinness) , and was raised in County Leitrim, Ireland.
He was married to Mary (Haran) Leahey.
An Army veteran, John was a Conductor with the MTA in New York City. He enjoyed playing the accordion, especially Irish music and played in several bands, one being the Bob Morris Band. He was a member of St. Stephens RC Church, Warwick, where he served as an usher.
A family statement reads: “He was the person everyone could always count on. His family, children, grandchildren turned to him more than anyone else. He will be dearly missed.”
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Warwick; his children: Mary Rosengrant and her husband Bill of Warwick, John Leahey and his wife Danielle of Warwick, Patrick Leahey and his wife Kathy of Warwick, Peggy O’Sullivan and her husband Ray of Gilbert, AZ, Noreen Mahon and her husband Eugene of Monroe, and Eileen Higgins and her husband Patrick of Warwick. He is also survived by his nineteen loving grandchildren: Ed, Michael, Tommy, James, Kayla, Brian, Erin, Colleen, Keri, Daniel, Jack, Ashley, Tim, Lauren, Ryan, Kevin, Kristen, Collette and Brayden.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 13th, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am on Thursday at St. Stephens Church, followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, Queens.
