Jerry Sommer, of Warwick, passed away on April 3, 2011 in St. Anthony’s Hospital. He was 78 years old.
Born on October 13, 1932 in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Solomon and Fay (Gordon)Sommer.
He was married to Janne (Bell) Sommer.
Jerry was an honorably discharged veteran of the US Navy, having served from
1952-54. He was a retired Electrician and lifelong member of Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. An Off- Broadway Actor, he was an enthusiastic Yankees fan, was a member of the Warwick Masonic Lodge, the Warwick Lions Club, the Committee for Sustainable Warwick, the Orange Environment Executive Board, the Warwick Valley Central School District School Board, the Town of Warwick Recreation Commission, the Committee for Purchase of Development Rights (PDR), the Warwick Preservation Act Steering Committee, and former Chairman of the Warwick Town Democratic Committee. He was a long-serving Secretary of Prudence Lodge and past President of the Electrical Square Club.
He is survived by his wife, Janne Sommer of Warwick; his children: Linda Sommer of NJ, David Sommer of Israel, and Deborah Sommer of Orange County, NY; his brothers, Leonard Sommer and Ted Sommer, both of NJ; his grandchildren: Rachel, Yedidya, Netanel, Maayan, Noam and Mattan; his former wife, Carole Sommer of Brenham, TX.
Funeral services were held on Monday at Temple Beth Shalom, Florida, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Warwick Masonic Lodge and/or the Winslow Therapeutic Center.
