age 90, of 40 Church St. N., Yemassee, S.C., passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick.
He was born January 26, 1918, in the Bronx, the son of the late Frederick and Henrietta Feldner. He grew up in Chester, New York, and graduated from Chester High School in 1934. He attended Antioch College and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Alfred University in 1941. He later received his Master’s degree from Columbia University.
George enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1941 and rose to the rank of Captain in the Field Artillery. He served overseas in World War II, as a reconnaissance officer in a field artillery battalion in Italy and in Austria, where he was in charge of Education and Religious Affairs Press Radio and Theatre for the province of Upper Austria. He earned the American Defense Service ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, and World War II European, African and Middle Eastern campaign medals. He was honorably discharged on June 14, 1946.
It was during the war, on May 8, 1943, in Paris, Texas, that he married Sarah Frances Sorrells, an Army nurse, after they met on a blind date which neither one of them wanted to go on. She preceded him in death on Sept. 15, 2000.
After the war, George took a position teaching mathematics at Warwick High School, where he taught for 32 years and served as chairman of the mathematics department before retiring in 1978.
During his years at Warwick High, George directed dramatics for a number of years, served as timekeeper for high school basketball games, held several offices in the teacher’s association and served as local delegate to the state teachers’ association convention. He also served in a number of capacities and held several offices in the Warwick United Methodist Church, including chairman of the Building Committee for the current church.
After his retirement, George and Sarah moved to Yemassee in 1986. There, he was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his five children: G. Martin (Nydia) Feldner Jr. of Warwick, Charles Frederick (Cynthia) Feldner of Yemassee, Amy Lawlor of Warwick, Emmitt B. (Teresa Hartle-Feldner) Feldner of Plymouth, Wis., and James H. (Mary) Feldner of Warwick; eight grandchildren: Matthew, Sarah and Amy Lawlor, Ethan, Alexander, Christopher, Catilin and Lauren Feldner; and one great grandson, Ty Feldner.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Bernhard; an infant sister, Mathilde Louise; and a granddaughter, Devon Feldner.
Visitation for George Feldner will be at the Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Services will be held Thursday, March 6, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Warwick United Methodist Church, 135 Forester Ave., Warwick, Rev. Chris Yount officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Schervier Pavilion (where he resided at the time of his death), 22 Van Duzer Place, Warwick.
