passed away peacefully on December 18, 2010 at home in Warwick, NY. She was 84 years old.
A 50 year resident of Warwick, she was born on February 10, 1926 in Edinburgh, Scotland to the late Fred and Evelyn Evans. They immigrated to Sunnyside Queens, NYC, shortly thereafter. After graduating high school, Jean worked as a Fashion Model in NYC. She met her future husband, the late Gerald Tougas (2009), on Long Island, NY, where he was working as an Airline Captain for Colonial Airlines. They were married in February, 1952. They lived in Flushing Meadows, Huntington, Pawling,
Cold Spring and finally settled in Warwick, NY in 1960. They were married for 57 years. Jean was a member of the Warwick Dutch Reformed Church, the Orange County Republican Party and the Orange County Mental Health Association. She was very active in the Warwick Drama Club during the 60’s & 70’s where she acted in numerous plays. Jean was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother to her three children. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and entertaining. By her own admission, she “hated” to cook. Her sense of humor was vibrant and her wit, sharp and bawdy. She lived 84 years, but she died far too young.
Jean is survived by one daughter, Christine Tougas; two sons: Paul Tougas of Cape Canaveral, Florida and Timothy Tougas and his wife Lisa of Colorado Springs, CO; and two grandchildren: Katherine and Abigail, also of Colorado Springs.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 28th, at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick.
Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
