Joan Patricia Burger

of Warwick, NY died April 22, 2008 surrounded by family and friends at home. She was 65. 

Born in Brooklyn, NY on July 21, 1942 to William and Catherine Hutchinson, Mrs. Burger was married on November 4, 1961 to her husband of  46 years, the late Warren E. Burger with whom she had five children. 

Mrs. Burger, RN, BSN, a registered professional nurse, was employed at Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, NY for 18 years. During that time she was instrumental in developing and managing 47 clinics in the hospital’s outpatient department.  She was also employed as a consultant for Ellenville Hospital.

She and Mr. Burger built their home in Warwick in 1973.  She was actively involved in a variety of community organizations and initiatives including the Orange County Mediation Project, Community 2000, Warwick Valley Gardeners, Holly Trail, 4-H and Pee Wee Football. She ran for Warwick Town Supervisor in 1999.  

In retirement, she enjoyed gardening, travel and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her mother, Catherine Hutchinson of Brooklyn, New York, her son Dean Burger and daughter-in-law Catherine and their children Kieran and Ailish of London, UK; son Daniel Burger of Hoboken, NJ, daughter Joan Ball and son-in-law Martin and their three children Andrew, Kelsey and Ian of Warwick; son Warren Burger and daughter-in-law Maura and their two children Hannah and Addison of Warwick; and daughter Jennifer Ostrowsky and son-in law Andy of Garrison, NY.  And her six siblings:  Patricia Mullen of Brooklyn, NY; Eileen Farrell of Belle Harbor, NY, Catherine Garafolo of Warwick, NY; Ann Marie Leary of Brooklyn, NY, William (Billy) Hutchinson of Warwick, NY and Loretta Lenihan of Warwick, NY.     

Visitation will be on Friday, April 25, from 2-4 & 6-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 pm on Saturday at St. Stephens RC Church, Warwick.  Interment will follow in Orange County Veterans Cemetery, Goshen.
