Elizabeth (“Bette”) Reder of Warwick, passed away on August 24, 2023, surrounded by her family, following a brief illness.
Born in Washington Heights in 1940 to Eugene and Marguerite Murphy, she had her sense of social duty honed at Saint Barnabas High School and Hunter College; Bette worked in various capacities for the Police Athletic League, the Federal Reserve, and other institutions before moving to Warwick, where she toiled as a generous and dedicated community member.
Bette served as a young-mother advocate at Birthright, a den mother for Cub Scouts, a volunteer at St. Stephen-St. Edward School, and an office manager for nearly three decades with the Herbert Kania Pediatric Group. She was an avid cook and baker, mowed down mystery novels and medical procedurals at a fearsome pace, and enjoyed strolling Warwick’s tree-lined byways and sharpening her Jeopardy! skills during her latter years.
She is survived by her son John Reder and his wife Twink of New York City; her daughter Regina Carhart and her husband Steven of Stanhope, NJ; and her daughter Joan Clauson and her husband Nial of Guilderland, NY; as well as by her grandsons, her much-cherished “boys” who were a constant treasure and source of affection: Tyler, Austin, and Cameron. She was predeceased by her loving brother James Murphy. A devoted lifetime Catholic and a beloved friend, Bette brought joy to the hearts of many and now rests in blessed peace.
Visitation will be on Sunday, August 27th from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 28, 2023, at St. Stephen RC Church, 75 Sanfordville Road, Warwick.
