Joana Sophia Van Duynhoven, a long-time Warwick resident, entered into rest on May 20, 2017 at the age of 92.
Joana was born on January 15, 1925 in Amsterdam. Holland to Johannes van Blokland and Antonia van Wess. She is predeceased by her husband, John Van Duynhoven (1986).
Joana immigrated to America in 1954 and settled in the Warwick area with her husband John and they raised their family. After her children had grown, she worked for Mount Alverno Center in Warwick, NY as a housekeeper until her retirement, and then as a timeless volunteer at both Mount Alverno Center and Schervier Pavilion.
Joana is survived by her sons: John Van Duynhoven and his wife Paula of Pickering, OH, and Anthony Van Duynhoven and his wife Christine of Wallkill, NY; her grandchildren: Amber Van Duynhoven and her fiancée Anthony Gierijalva of Phoenix, AZ, Sarah Van Duynhoven of Phoenix, AZ, John Van Duynhoven of Pickering, OH, Jeffery Sweeney and his wife Alyce Dolce of Gardiner, NY, Shannon Sweeney of Wallkill, NY, Brian Sweeney of Hallandale, FL; and great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Thomas, Tyler, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, May 23rd, from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday at St. Stephen RC Church, Warwick, followed by interment in St. Stephen’s Cemetery.
