
of Warwick (formerly of the Bronx), passed away on December 24, 2009 at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Castle Point. He was 62 years old.
Born on October 12, 1947 in New York City, he was the son of the late Michael George and Catherine (Plackis) Contaxis.
He was married to Patricia A. (Tyndall) Contaxis.
Mr. Contaxis was retired from Verizon in Nanuet, NY, after 38 years.
A family statement reads: “George was the best husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He loved his country and the brothers with whom he served. He was proud of his service and had no regrets. His services to his country were continued in his activities in the Legion. He will be deeply missed.”
An Air Force veteran of the Viet Nam war, he was past Vice Commander of the Orange County American Legion, Post 440, past Vice Commander of the American Legion
Post 214 in Warwick, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Warwick, a member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Odd Fellows as a Noble Grand, was a past member of the Goodwill Hook & Ladder Company, Warwick, and a member of AOH, Division 3, Warwick. He was a parishioner of St. Stephen’s RC Church, where he sang in the choir.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Warwick; a son, Michael Contaxis and his wife Tracy of Warwick; a daughter, Christine Contaxis of Ellenville; a grandson, Mason Michael Contaxis; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, John Contaxis.
The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses at Castle Point who cared for George these last days.
Visitation will be on Monday, December 28th and Tuesday, December 29th from 2-4 &
7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday at St. Stephens RC Church, followed by interment in Orange County Veterans Cemetery, Goshen.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
