of Warwick, passed away on December 18, 2009 at St. Anthony’s Hospital. She was 81 years old.
Born on September 18, 1928 in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late
Edward A. Owens and Martha Dunn Owens.
She was married to the late Thomas John Tavernia. (1994)
Joan was formerly a Clerk with A & P Tea Company, Yonkers. She was a volunteer with St. Anthony’s Hospital, Chaplain of the American Legion Auxiliary, Nicholas P. Lesandro Post #214, Warwick, a member of the Golden Floridians Senior Club, a volunteer with the Warwick Valley Ecumenical Food Pantry, and a parishioner of
St. Stephens RC Church.
A family statement reads: “She was a generous, loving and well-loved person. She was much like God would like each of us to be.”
She is survived by her niece, Dawn Salo of Cunning, GA; nephew, Edward Owens of Berwick, PA; niece, Denise Van Wyk of Bethlehem, PA; nephew, Liam Owens of Slate Hill, NY; niece, Bryn Joyce of Nottingham, NH; many great-nieces & great-nephews.
Visitation will be on Sunday, December 20, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick, NY. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am on Monday at St. Stephens RC Church, followed by interment in St. Stephens Cemetery.
