a lifelong resident of Warwick, NY, passed away on October 14, 2010 at St Anthony Community Hospital, Warwick. He was 83 years old.
Born on January 12, 1927 in Warwick, NY, he was the son of the late Walter J. O’Dell Sr. and Margaret (nee Grant) O’Dell.
He was predeceased by his wife Adeline Elizabeth (Betty) (nee Hann) O’Dell in 2008.
A family statement reads: “Uncle Walt” was well known for his dedication to charitable organizations and willingness to give his time for community service. An active “Fireman” for over 60 years in the Excelsior Hose Company, he knew and worked with many fireman throughout NY State. He was also known for his great cooking, an avid fisherman and hunter. .”
Walter was a machinist for Lehigh and Hudson River Railroad and later for Conrail. He was a member of the Warwick United Methodist Church in Warwick, a sixty year member of the Warwick Fire Department and Past Chief of the Excelsior Hose Company of the Warwick Fire Department, a Fire Commissioner of the Warwick Fire District, and a member of the past Chiefs Association of District Six. Also he was past President of the Warwick VFW Post 4662 and a former member of the Elks.
He is survived by his brother Charles O’ Dell of Warwick, his nieces Cindy Gillette of Drayden, MD, Roxanne Dean of Virginia Beach, VA , Andrea O’Dell of Chestnut Ridge, NY, Charlene Avila of West Port, CT, Joyce Straub of Goshen, Darlene Simimi of Palm Harbor, FL and Carol Falcone of Friendswood, TX. His nephews William Romer of Milford, PA and Alan Hann of Warwick, NY his sister-in-law Josephine Romer of Drayden MD.
Visitation will be on Saturday, October 16, 2010 and Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick. Funeral Services will be at 11:00am on Monday at Warwick United Methodist Church, 135 Forester Ave Warwick, NY, followed by interment in St Stephen Cemetery Warwick.
