Nellie Fahy

Nellie Fahy of Warwick, NY, passed away on Saturday, July 16th in Middletown. She was 94 years old.

Nellie was born Oct. 4, 1927 in New York City. The family moved back to Ireland in 1932 and Nellie was raised in Donnycarney, Dublin. She attended St. Vincent DePaul Girls School in Marino, Dublin and studied Irish Dancing at Cadwell School in Dublin. Nellie was very passionate about dancing, conducting dance lessons for the neighborhood kids at her family’s house on Elm Rd. Nellie was also a gifted Gaelic speaker.

Nellie returned to NY in 1948. She settled in the Bronx where she became a member of the McNiff Irish Dancers. She met her future husband, John “Shaun” Fahy from Claregalway Ireland, in NY. Nellie and Shaun were married April 11, 1953. They had four children in the Bronx and in 1965 the family moved to Warwick NY. Nellie was very active in St. Stephen the First Martyr parish in Warwick. She was the school librarian at St. Stephen’s elementary school for years and when she retired from the school, she started working in the Parish Rectory, taking care of the Parish priests. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Court St. Anne #909, the Parish Solidality and the church choir. Nellie loved to sing and she would sing all day, every day. She was always the first one to volunteer for both school and church events.

Nellie was preceded in death by her husband Shaun, her parents Michael and Ellen Solan, her brother James and her sister Alice. She is survived by her brothers Sean Solan and his wife Bridget of Syracuse, NY, and Michael Solan and his wife Kathleen of West Bloomfield, MI, her children: John Fahy of Ontario, NY, Michael Fahy and his wife Alice of Pleasanton, CA, Ann Sewall of Montgomery, NY and Ellen Glebocki and her husband Dale of Middletown, NY. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Claire Fahy of Rochester, NY, Lynne Fahy of Geneva, NY, Brian Sewall of Walden, NY, Valerie Sewall of Montgomery, NY, Michael Hasbrouck and his wife Rebecca of Titusville, FL, Elizabeth Murtagh and her husband Micheal of Batavia, IL, Mary Hasbrouck of Mary Esther, FL and Colleen Sewall of Montgomery, NY. She is also survived by her six great grandchildren: Giada, Milena, and Declan of Titusville, Luciano and Bellami of Montgomery and Lily Ann of Batavia as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 27th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 28th at St. Stephen the First Martyr Church, 75 Sanfordville Road, Warwick, followed by interment in St. Stephen’s Cemetery.To view the Funeral Mass live online at the scheduled time, use this link: Fahy, Nellie Funeral 7.28.2022
