Edward P. Scharfenberger, of Warwick, NY (formerly of Ridgewood, Queens) passed away on January 21, 2015 at home.  He was 94 years old.

Born on March 28, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Jeckel) Scharfenberger.

He was married for 68 years to Elaine (Magdal) Scharfenberger.

Ed served with the US Army during World War II as a Paratrooper and a First Lieutenant in Field Artillery and  was a member of American Legion Post 214 in Warwick.  He worked in the family business, Ecclesiastical Art Co., with his father and brothers before earning his law degree. As an attorney, he worked for Ticor in Forest Hills, Queens, retiring in 1985 and was a member of the American Bar Association.  After retirement, he was a Professor at St. John’s University until 1989.  He was a founding member of the Warwick Taxpayers Association.

A member of St. Stephen RC Church in Warwick, he was a lifelong champion of Catholic education, and founded the St. Stephen-St. Edward Educational Trust.

Ed was devoted to his faith and his family.  He once confided to his family that he was a dreamer by nature, a realist by necessity.  Always involved in a project, he enjoyed being with his loved ones and taught his grandchildren many skills.  He strived to find the best in people and left a wonderful example of what a good husband, father and citizen should be.

He is survived by his wife, the love of his life,  Elaine of Warwick; his children:  son, Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, of Albany;  daughter, Miriam Muse and her husband Glenn of Warwick; son, James Scharfenberger of Warwick;  son, Dr. Dennis Scharfenberger and his wife Anna of Warwick; and daughter, Lois Sheptuck and her husband Paul of Edison, NJ;  six grandchildren:  Ian, Kimberly, Amy, Thomas, Matthew & Luke.  He has joined his grandson, Jon, who predeceased him.

Visitation will be on Friday, January 23rd, from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick.  Funeral Mass will be at 11 am on Saturday at St. Stephen RC Church, followed by interment in St. Stephen Cemetery.
