Born on September 10 1954 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Mario A. and
Marie ( nee Martinez) Fernandez.
George was a Sr. Business Systems Analyst – Project Manager with Collabera and
worked with AIG in Jersey City. He graduated Power Memorial Academy in NYC and
had worked for the New York City Ballet for a number of years. He worked his way up
from being an elevator boy to landing a position in Administration, becoming good
friends with George Balanchine in the process.
A family statement reads “George was a man of many passions. A sports fan of the
Knicks, football Giants and Steelers, he loved to play basketball and had a killer jump
shot. He also enjoyed and was skilled at archery. George loved nature – especially
birds but was intrigued by all animals. George was an excellent chef and an oenophile
(connoisseur of wines). He loved music of many styles, including rock, jazz and blues
but his overall favorite was classical. He was an excellent pianist who played with
passion. He was a father figure to many of his daughter’s friends but most of all he
loved his family and will be dearly missed by them and all who knew and loved him.”
He is survived by his daughters Isabel T. Fernandez of Warwick, NY and Iris M.
Fernandez of New York, NY and their mother Nancy Fernandez of Warwick; mother
Marie Fernandez of Warwick, NY; brothers Alan Fernandez of Florida, NY and Paul
Fernandez of Rutherford, NJ as well as many nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his brother Glenn Fernandez
Memorial Visitation will be on Sunday, April 10 th 2016, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the
Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick, NY. Funeral
Mass will be celebrated 10:00 am Monday at St. Stephen Church 75 Sanfordville Rd.
Warwick, NY. Cremation was private.
