of Chester, passed away on September 15, 2010 at Schervier Pavilion. He was 78 years old.
Born on January 7, 1932 in Chester, NY, he was the son of the late Alex and Bessie (Ross) Stewart.
He was married to the late Helen May (Lewis) Stewart, who passed away in 1991.
Mr. Stewart served with the US Army from 1950-56, was in the Army Reserves from 1970-1991, and was the proud father of six retired military sons, one Marine and five who served in the Army. Currently, he has four grandchildren serving in the active military service. A member of American Legion Post #214 in Warwick, he drove a school bus in Warwick for 25-30 years, was a Cook at St. Anthony’s Community Hospital for 25-30 years, and he was an avid deer hunter.
He is survived by his children: Philip Stewart of Costa Rica, Robert Stewart of North Carolina, Paul Stewart of Middletown, Irene Caldwell of Middletown, Coleen Stewart of Middletown, Tim Stewart of Maybrook, James Stewart of Oklahoma, Vicky Class of Warwick, Ralph Stewart of Warwick, Alex Stewart of Ithaca, and Taiisha Hall of Warwick; 36 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; two cousins: Gloria Hicks and Harvey Freeman, both of Chester; also, many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 17, 2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 18th, at Warwick United Methodist Church, 135 Forester Avenue, Warwick, followed by interment in Warwick Cemetery.
