George H. Van Tuyl III, passed away on September 6, 2011 at Valley View, Goshen. He was 76 years old.
Born on May 14, 1935 in Allentown, PA, he was the son of the late George H. Van Tuyl, Jr. and Kathryn Leach Van Tuyl.
He was the husband of Lois (Robertson) Van Tuyl and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 21, 2011.
A 1959 graduate of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA, he then served with the US Army from 1959-1961 as a 1st LT and served as a Platoon Leader in the Transportation Company, stationed in Anchorage, AK. He worked for Montgomery Ward Catalogue Division as the National Shoe Buyer, retiring and then was a realtor in Warwick for many years with Rod Peck Century 21. A strong supporter of the Albert Wisner Public Library, he served as a member of the Library Board, and was a member of Warwick United Methodist Church.
In addition to spending time with his family, George enjoyed fishing, whether it was in the pond at the house or on a fishing trip with his friends.
George was devoted to his family and dedicated to his country and community. He came from a long line of Dutch ancestors, and took an interest in the history of the Van Tuyl family, as chronicled by his Uncle Hiram and other writers. Jan Otto Van Tuyl came to over to New Amsterdam aboard De Bonte Koe (The Spotted Cow) in 1663. In that tradition, George was an undaunted commuter, making the daily trip to the Tuxedo train
station in a VW dubbed Danny the Dasher. For many years he fulfilled the demands of a job in the city while enjoying the rewards of a family that loved him. He and Lois raised their children in Warwick, and their home was a place of where he could take pride in everything that was close to him. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and his family and friends were always his greatest source of comfort and
happiness.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mount Alverno and Valley View Nursing Home for taking such good care of George.
He is survived by his wife, Lois of Warwick; daughters Barbara Sharer and husband Jeff of Wyckoff, NJ, Susan Rota and husband Ken of Warwick, and Betsy Mitchell and husband Ken of Warwick; grandchildren: Michael and Morgan Sharer, Cassidy and Megan Rota; a brother, John Van Tuyl of Warwick.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 9th, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday at Warwick United Methodist Church, 135 Forester Ave., Warwick.
