Alba 1969 - 1992

Alba was very proud when Nydia received her AA degree from NYC Community College.  Shortly afterwards Nydia married and moved to the Bronx.  When Alba's position at McGraw Hill was moved out of NYC, Alba took and passed the civil service test and was place in the Department of Transportation, despite being legally blind.  She worked at various positions and finally retired at age 70 from the Parking Violations Bureau.  Never seeing well enough to drive a car in her life, she knew every parking violation and the associated fines.  She work next to the judge who heard the cases and entered the proceedings into a computer (which had a giant size screen to accommodate her visual disability).  During that time she formed a strong friendship with a gentleman who proposed marriage often but she had no desire to take that route again.  They enjoyed each others company and when he became ill with emphysema she made sure he got proper care until his death.

She was a very active member of her union, Communications Workers of America Local 1180 (CWA) and served as Shops Stewart for several years.  In that capacity she traveled to London and Thailand with other members of her local.  When she retired, Alba moved from her Washington Heights apartment of over 40 years to a condo in Miami Beach, Florida.  While in Florida Alba volunteered at the Dade County Commissioners office manning the senior citizen hot line 3 days a week.  She enjoyed decorating her beautiful condo and her work at the commissioner's office.
