Joseph W. Ginley

9/8/2023

Joseph W. Ginley of Warwick, NY, passed away on September 8, 2023, at St. Anthony Community Hospital, with his loving family by his side. He was 88 years old.

Born in Astoria, Queens on April 1, 1935, he was the son of Joseph F. and Marion (nee Cooley) Ginley.

Joe lived an amazing life dedicated to his family, his community, and to the service of his country. He served in multiple branches of the US military. Joe signed on to the US Army from 1954 to 1957; he went on to become a Sergeant in the US Coast Guard from 1973 to 1979; served in the US Air Force from 1979 to 1981; followed by service in the NY Air National Guard at Stewart from 1981 to 1995, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He also served in the FDNY as a Firefighter from 1962 to 1982 in Engine Co. 8.

Joe was a man of deep faith, who also gave much of his time to charitable organizations both inside and outside of the Fire Department. Joe set a great example for his five sons who followed in his footsteps, serving in the US military and the FDNY. It was always family first with Joe.

Joe married the love of his life, Elizabeth (née McConnell) Ginley from Dublin, Ireland in 1959. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage together, with Betty always at his side. They experienced a lifetime of travel, which included skiing, golf, and countless other adventures all over the world. For example, they took 45 trips all over Europe, 26 cruises, expeditions to the Great Wall of China, Australia, and went on Safari in Africa to name just a few. Joe was also an avid sports fan: attending World Series, Golf Majors, Olympics, and Super Bowls to name a few. He was a devoted fan of the NY Giants and the NY Yankees.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife Betty; four sons: Joseph and his wife Barbara; Robert and his wife Susan; April (née Casey) Ginley; Patrick and his wife Cathy; Tim and his wife Denise; and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Lt. John Ginley (Engine Co. 40) in the attacks of 9/11 and granddaughter Christina Ginley in 2013.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, September 17, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 18, at St. Stephen RC Church, 75 Sanfordville Road, Warwick, followed by interment in Orange County Veterans Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY.  To view the mass live online at the scheduled time, use this linK:
