Madeline Schieber

3/10/2023

Madeline Elizabeth Schieber beloved mother, grandmother, and friend entered into rest on March 10, 2023 at the remarkable age of 108. Most recently she had been a resident at Sapphire Nursing Home in Goshen, NY.

The daughter of Helen and Frederick Wass, she was born on March 18, 1914. She was raised with her sister, Alice, in New York City. Madeline married her husband, Irving (Charlie), and continued to be a city -dweller while raising their four children, Paul, Helen, Richard, and Diana. In the 1970s, Madeline and Charlie moved to Suffolk County, Long Island. Living only a few miles from Fire Island, she spent many of her days enjoying time at the beach.

Madeline’s ability to make friends made her a cherished neighbor to all. She was especially befriended by the children, who enjoyed the warmness of her company. She was a teacher to them in many ways, helping them to succeed in school. Madeline was also an animal lover and welcomed many cats and dogs as companions in her home over the years.

Madeline was autodidactic, a self teacher. She was a regular patron at her local library. An avid listener of talk radio, she remained interested in politics right until the last national election. She also tuned into programs that discussed the latest health protocols, and integrated them into her daily living. Madeline's talents were many including cooking, sewing, crocheting, and gardening. Having lived through the depression, Madeline had a special knack for making any occasion fun on a thrifty budget.

Madeline took great pride in her family and especially loved to host family gatherings. She was known to share the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her walls were covered with their photograph collages, and she treasured receiving visits, phone calls, and letters.

Madeline was predeceased by her sister, Alice, her husband, Charlie, her son, Richard, her daughter- in- law, Johanna, and her son-in-law, Bob.

She is survived by her devoted children: Paul, Helen, and Diana (Guy), her grandchildren: Victoria (Chris),Laura, Paul (Marie), Patricia, and Joann (Howard), great grandchildren: Shelby (Adam), Jake, Madeline Marie, Jonah, Tobias, Madeline Grace, and John, along with her good friends, Camille and John.

Madeline’s life was well-lived and she was loved much. She was someone who made our world a better place. To know her was a special gift that had a positive impact on the lives of those around her.

Visitation will be held at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home located at 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick, NY on Thursday, March 16, 2023 between the hours of 3PM to 7PM. Dear Paul and the Scheiber family, My sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. Unfortunately, I did not know your mother and I really regret that. She sounds like someone I would have loved to spend time with and be close to. Paul, your devotion to your mother has been extraordinary. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. It doesn't matter how old a person is when they pass away, there is still a gaping hole left. Best wishes to you and the family, Paula Spector
