Theodore Marshall Swartwood of Westtown, NY and Wellington, FL passed away peacefully on January 14, 2021. He was 87 years old.

Born on August 9, 1933 in Kingston, PA, he was the son of Theodore M. and Gladys (nee Keir) Swartwood.

Marshall was born in Kingston, PA on August 9, 1933. He graduated from Harpur College, now SUNY Binghamton, in 1956; he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and served at Camp Lejeune. Upon earning an MBA from the Johnson School of Business at Cornell University, he joined Blythe & Co., a Wall Street investment banking firm, as a salesman. He founded Faherty & Swartwood, a boutique investment banking firm in 1969 and then founded Swartwood Hesse Inc., a venture banking firm in 1980 and served as Chairman and CEO until 2015. Among his numerous business interests, he also served as President of Coal Fuels, Inc., a coal mining business, Harlan, KY; founded Otisville BioTech, Inc., Otisville, NY; and led the acquisition of R.G. Dickinson, a Des Moines, IA-based brokerage in 1990. He was active in entrepreneurial ventures throughout his career. In 2018, he became one of the oldest certified hemp farmers in New York.

He was an avid lifetime golfer learning to play while caddying as a boy at IBM Country Club, an honorary member and past club champion at his beloved Morris County Golf Club in Morristown NJ as well as a member of Palm Beach Polo Golf Club in Wellington FL . A passionate NY Giants fan and season ticket holder. He served as a founding board member of the Orange County Land Trust.

Purchased an abandoned horse farm in 1978, he restored it, naming it Coal Tree Farm, bred thoroughbred racehorses and later finding the joy of watching the Windy Hollow Hunt Fox Hunting Club gallop down the farm lane in pursuit of quarry. Marshall loved his land and his John Deere tractor was a prized possession. He was truly a “Gentleman Farmer.” Coal Tree Farm became the anchor for both his and his wife’s families and friends creating decades of celebrations and memories.

Marshall always looked forward, hungry for knowledge, so curious, he read everything that came his way. He was the big picture deal “Guy”. He mentored countless young people and helped them find their dreams.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Doty-Lloyd; son, Thomas M. Swartwood and his wife Terri Combs; daughter, Susan Chipoletti; son, Theodore M. Swartwood and his fiancée Alicia Breen; and five grandchildren: Kaitlin Swartwood, Atticus Swartwood, Anthony Chipoletti, Declan Swartwood and Maeve Swartwood; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.

Hello and I hope this finds you well. My name is Samantha Ivanic and I was recently thinking over my life and I thought of your husband. When I was 7 he was my " Uncle Marshall.". I know the marriage he had to my aunt was not a good one and seeing the pictures of you and him I am so happy he found love. I finally found the courage to try to reach him only to say what a meaningful part he played in my life but I see I am too late I will not tell you anything you don't already know about your husband he was a great man and even though I was only seven most of my memories are on that farm. He had an old mustang and would take us out in the fields. He let me ride really fast on one of the horses ( while he really steered), ice skating and fishing. things I never would have done otherwise. He was very kind and good to my mother who passed 4 years ago at the age of 58 from cancer, employing her when no one else would . Thank you and if there's anything you need please ask, sincerely Samantha Ivanic
