William J. Cerk (aka Cerkvenik)


William J. Cerk, (aka Cerkvenik), of Warwick,  passed away on October 14, 2018 at Villa Marie Claire, Saddle River, NJ.  He was 93 years old.

Born on August 29, 1925 in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lea (Bloker) Cerkvenik.

He was married for 62-1/2 to the late Muriel (Milo) Cerkvenik (2012).

A veteran of the US Army,  he was a Police Officer with the NYC Police Department for 36 years before retiring.  He worked in the Intelligence Division of the NYPD at City Hall in NYC.  He was a member of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association, NYC, and the Orange County Shields for over 20 years. 

He is survived by his children:  Dr. Kathleen Cerkvenik of Midland Park, NJ and Warwick, NY, William Cerkvenik and his wife Kathleen of Wilmington, NC, Harold Cerkvenik of Pearl River, NY, Robert Cerkvenik of Staten Island, NY, and Michael Cerkvenik and his wife Leah of Atlantic Highlands, NJ;  five grandchildren:  Lea Anne Bille, Carol Maffei, Christopher Cerkvenik, Daniel Cerkvenik and Brian Cerkvenik; ten great-grandchildren:  Megan Maffei, Brianna Maffei, Connor Bille, Lindsey Maffei, Dylan Bille, Kyle Bille, Jeffrey Cerkvenik, Braxton Cerkvenik, MacKenzie Cerkvenik and Colton Cerkvenik. He is also survived sisters Dorothy Bell of Odenton, MD and Evelyn Burtner of Winter Park, FL.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 16th, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY.   Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday at St. Stephen RC Church, Warwick, followed by interment in St. Josephs Cemetery, Florida, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to NYC PBA Widows & Children’s Fund, c/o Joseph Alejandro, Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, 125 Broad St, 11th floor, NY, NY, 10004-2400.

So sorry for your loss! Will always cherish my memories of Uncle Bill and Aunt Muriel around the fireside in Pennsy! It made my dad and mom (Joe and Jeannie) so happy when they came up to visit! They had a lot of fun together :) Love, Susan
