Claire Gaston

Claire Gaston, of Warwick, formerly of Pinehurst, NC and Ridgewood, NJ, passed away on September 30, 2017 at Schervier Pavilion. She was 94 years old.

Born January 10, 1923 in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Durham) Bauer and grew up in Glen Rock, NJ.  She was predeceased by her sister, Janet Senna

She was married to the late Edward A. Gaston (Ned) in 1950 and raised their four children in Ridgewood, NJ before moving to Pinehurst, NC in 1986.

Claire was a WW II Navy veteran, serving from 1943-1946.  She served as a WAVE and was stationed at Hunter College in New York City.  Her job was to drive important Navy personnel around the city. 

She was a full-time mom and as the children grew older, she became a real estate agent for Century 21.  In her younger days, Claire was a professional dancer at the Roxy Theater in New York City.  She was a choreographer for local shows and a member of the Baguettes and Sophisticated Ladies dance groups in Pinehurst, NC.  She loved animals, especially dogs, and her house was always the “hub” of social activity. 

Claire was an avid golfer and former member of Pinehurst Country Club, Upper Montclair Country Club, High Mountain Country Club, and Saddle River Golf Club.  She won many ladies championships and achieved six holes in one during her career.  She was a painter and member of the Arts Council of Moore County (NC) and the Warwick Art League.

Claire is survived by her children Patricia Bayne and her husband, Doc, of Hewitt, NJ, Ned Gaston and his wife, Erica, of Richmond, VT, Suzanne Gaston and her husband, Craig Wachsman, of Warwick, NY, and Bill Gaston and his wife, Kathy, of Enosburg Falls, VT, grandchildren Joshua and Bronwyn Taylor and her husband, Conor Lennon, Travis Gaston, Graham and Meghan Wachsman, Rachel Gaston and her husband, Jeremy Gartner, Bailey and Justus Gaston, and great-grand daughter Aoife Taylor Lennon.

Memorial visitation will be on Sunday, October 8th from 5-7 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY.  Internment is private.

Such a warm and lovely lady. Also not to be taken lightly in a game of cards. A playful twinkle in the eyes. Made her mark with style and showed that she cared.
