Diane Siegel Picozzi

11/10/2015

Diane “Cookie” Siegel Picozzi,  a long-time resident of Fishkill, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 10th, 2015, at the age of 77.

She was born in 1937 to Robert and Mollie Siegel, and was proud of her Jewish and Brooklyn heritage. Diane was predeceased by her brother, Henry Siegel of Brooklyn, NY, and sister, Joan Starr of Alexandria, VA.

She loved her children, David and Linda Picozzi, and grandchildren, Laura Picozzi, Roxy Picozzi, Cristina Picozzi and Elizabeth Reeder.  Her dogs, Serena and Sweetie Pie, were her other joys in life.

Diane attended Brooklyn College, PACE University, and Marist College. She received her Undergraduate, Master’s and PhD in Special Education. She didn’t accept limits as exemplified by being an involved single mom, Teacher, Principal and Superintendent of Schools.  Upon retirement, Diane went on to become a Real Estate Broker, tutored from her home, taught Defensive Driving for New York State, and volunteered for the Board of Elections as well as local animal shelters.  She also enjoyed gardening, exercising at the Fishkill Gold’s Gym, and socializing at the Fishkill Senior Center.

Diane was a ‘giver’ and founded the Girls Club of America in Flushing, NY. She always had a mission, was politically active, fought for women’s rights, and put others well-being first. Diane literally stood in-between two boys that were about to be attacked by a mob of over 100 city youths, and saved their lives. Another time, she selflessly took her ‘new’ used car and blocked a car thief from getting away.

A “Celebration of Diane’s Life” will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, 25 Westage Drive, Fishkill, NY                    12524, (845) 896-7100, on December 3rd from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
