Peter D. Mercatili, Sr.

7/5/2015

Peter D. Mercatili, Sr. of Warwick entered into eternal rest on July 5, 2015 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.  He was 81 years old.  He was a humble man of dignity, strength and compassion.

One of three children born to the late Anna Alco of Archbald, PA and the late Vincenzo Mercatili of Cossignano, Italy, Pete was born on May 7, 1934 in Jessup, PA.  He graduated from Blakely High School and served his country in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 serving a tour of duty in Germany.  Pete worked for twenty years for the Ford Motor Company and eighteen years for the State of New York.  He was a member of the Saint Stephen The Martyr Roman Catholic Church in Warwick.

On April 7, 1958 Pete married the love of his life, Julia Nardi. Peter adored his wife and never missed an opportunity to comment on her beauty or to enjoy her homemade pasta.  They were a team who together raised five children.  Pete’s eldest son, Vincent, predeceased him.  In addition to his wife, at home, he is survived by four children, Peter Jr. and his wife, Pamela of Colonia, NJ, Daniel and his wife Yasmina of Cumming, GA, Marcella Krauss and her husband, Steven of Pleasantville, NY and Stephen and his wife, Margaret of Orefied, PA.  His younger brother and best friend, Joseph and his dear wife, Shirlee of Moosic PA, also survive him.  Pete’s elder brother, James, predeceased him.  Pete, known to his grandchildren as Nonno, is survived by six granddaughters, Anna, Gina, Christina, Julia, Stephanie and Helena, two grandsons, Jonathon and Peter and one great granddaughter, Carrie.  Although he had endless love for his grandchildren, his favorite expression was, “Thank God they go home at night.”

Pete was an avid gardener who loved to mow his grass.  His tomatoes, beans and zucchini were legendary, a source of great satisfaction to Pete, a proud Italian-American.  When not gardening, Pete could be found bowling at Pin Street.  He was a regular bowler in the senior league.  He celebrated his 80th birthday last year with a bowling party for family and close friends.  Baseball was another of Pete’s passions.  He was proud to be a fan of his beloved Detroit Tigers for over 70 years.  Go Tigers!

The family would like to thank Drs. Patricia Rossi, Thomas Eanelli and John Fiore, as well as the entire staff at Schervier Pavilion, for their dedication and care, the Warwick Community Ambulance members for their courteous and attentive service, Syndy Stewart and Debbie Boye for their loving care of Pete in his final days, and all of the providers at the Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties for their constant support.

Visitation for family and friends will take place from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 8th, at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home in Warwick.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be said on July 9th at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen The Martyr Roman Catholic Church, Warwick.  Burial will follow at Orange County Veterans Cemetery, Goshen.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Pete’s memory to the Warwick Community Ambulance, P.O. Box 315 Warwick, NY 10990 or to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
