Doland Sanford Knapp

Doland S. Knapp, a lifelong resident of Warwick, NY, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2015. He was 90 years old.
Born on January 5, 1925 in Warwick, NY, he was the son of John H. and Carrie B. (Welch) Knapp.
Following his graduation from Warwick High School, Doland joined the Army Air Force where he completed 30 missions as the tail gunner on a B-17, the “FUDDY DUDDY” during World War II. After serving his country, he returned to Warwick where he worked for the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway, and later the Warwick Post Office as a letter carrier, where he retired in 1987 with over 30 years of service. He spent many years of retirement attending and supporting the National Warplane Museum air shows across New York State. At the air shows, he could be seen standing steadfast next to the B-17 that bore the name of his plane, the “FUDDY DUDDY”, reminiscing and sharing stories with all who shared his love for that sturdy bomber.
He was a lifetime member of the Warwick Fire Department (Excelsior Hose Company), the Warwick VFW Post 4662, and the American Legion Post 214. He was a member of the Warwick United Methodist Church.
Doland is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Antoinette (Garcia) Knapp. Beloved father of son, Sanford Knapp and his wife Eileen of Warwick, and treasured daughter, Theresa Knapp-David and her husband Joseph of Kinderhook. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Alan, Michael, Kimberly, Joy and Jessica, and loving great -grandchildren: Landon, Blake, Aiden and Olivia. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, John and Raymond, and sister, Lois DeLade.
Visitation will be on Monday, April 6th, 2015 from 10:30 am-12:30 pm, at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY. A celebration of Doland’s life will follow at 12:30 pm. Interment will be in Warwick Cemetery.
