Liselotte E. "Lilo" Grunert

Liselotte E. “Lilo” Grunert, a 7-year resident of the Promenade at Middletown (formerly of San Jose and Sacramento, CA), passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 10, 2014. She was 86 years old.
Born on January 23, 1928, in Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia, she was the daughter of the late Siegfried Heisig and Emilie Dworzak. The family lived and were the merchants in their beloved Nieder-Lindewiesse, Czech. She was predeceased by her brother, Ernst Heisig.
After World War II, Lilo lived in Germany where she studied nursing. Lilo came to the United States in 1956 where she lived and worked in New Hampshire for a couple of years. However, finding the Northeast too cold, she drove cross-country in her Volkswagon Beetle and settled in San Jose, CA, where she lived for 35 years and practiced nursing at O’Connor Hospital for 15 years. She retired from nursing when she married the late Rodger Grunert. She later moved to Sacramento, CA, where she lived for 15 years prior to moving back to the Northeast to be with her lifelong friend, the late Hildegard Bach of Warwick, and her family.
Lilo is survived by her beloved friends and “family”, Susan (Sue) Bach and her husband Gary Farkas of Warwick; Ludwig (Lou) Bach and his wife Maureen of Marlboro; and Lou’s children, Louie and his wife Lauren, Amelia, Adam and Megan.
The family statement reads: “Lilo was a very loving and giving person. Prior to suffering from a stroke, she enjoyed living life, having a good time, and taking pleasure in life’s little things. She had “wanderlust” and liked to travel. She also took pleasure in surprising people by doing things for them if it would make life a little easier for them. Lilo loved spending hours in her garden tending to her many flowers and plants. She had a kind and gentle nature and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.”
Visitation will be on Saturday, June 14th, from 10:30am-12:00 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm. Private cremation.
